A public relation officer (PRO) for a private hospital was today arrested for allegedly making an anonymous call to a Mumbai police control room saying that minister of State for Home (Rural) Nitin Raut's daughter would be kidnapped, police said today.

The accused identified as Rohit Gaikwad (31) was nabbed from his residence at Nerul in neighbouring Navi Mumbai district, police said adding that he intended to take revenge on the police department.

"Rohit was angry with the police as he was arrested on charges of extortion in 2001. He had attempted to extort money from singer Vaishali Samant," Joint Police Commissioner (Crime) Rakesh Maria said.

Originally a resident of Tilak Nagar in the city, Rohit later shifted to Nerul in Navi Mumbai and works as a PRO for Shri hospital there.

Last Friday, Rohit allegedly called the police control room from a mobile phone in the afternoon saying that Raut's daughter Deeksha (22) would be kidnapped, throwing the entire force into high gear.

As he immediately disconnected the call, police called him back on the number but were unable to reach him as he switched it off.

Deeksha was in the city to appear for a commercial pilot examination the day the call was made.

Based on the mobile number, police traced Damodar Shirwale, a retired employee of Rastriya Chemicals and Fertilisers (RCF), in whose name the number was registered.

When questioned Shirwale said he had taken the service for his cousin sister Chandrabhaga Gaikwad, Maria said.

Chandrabhaga, who works as a sweeper, got the connection in the name of Shirwale, as she thought she would not get the service in her name.

"She told us that phone was being used by her son Rohit. But Rohit claimed that the phone was lost and he had even complained to customer care service to disconnect the service which was done on Friday," Maria said.

However, during sustained interrogation, Rohit admitted that he had made the call.

The police recovered the handset from Rohit's sister residing in Dombivli in neighbouring Thane district, besides the SIM card which he buried near her house.
