As it prepares to submit its report to the state government on the demand by Marathas for quotas, the Maharashtra State Backward Class Commission (MSBCC) has launched a massive data mining and analysis exercise to gauge the community's claims about backwardness.

"Data interpretation is on. This includes information collected through an on-field survey to judge them on the parameters of backwardness, memorandums received by us and details sent by the state government about the representation of Marathas in government jobs and in schools, colleges and universities," MSBCC sources told DNA.

This data-mining and deciphering exercise, which is underway at Pune, will draw inferences and judge the community on the parameters of social and educational backwardness like lack of political representation, its social, educational and economic conditions and employment status. The commission has received over 1.75 lakh representations.

"We will have to decide if Marathas are socially and educationally backward based on these criteria. If the community confirms to these parameters, we may have to include them in the OBC category, which is an intermediate category for quota benefits and increase the percentage of reservations based on their population," the source explained.

He added they planned to submit their report to the state government by October 31. "After the analysis is over, we will discuss the inferences and get down to the actual report writing. We have deployed the services of state government statisticians and experts including those from universities and educational institutions. The commission is also utilising the services of BARTI for collecting references and for research," he said.
