A man murdered his 25-year-old daughter on Sunday because she was not willing to marry a bridegroom from their caste. The incident of honour killing, that took place in Aundh, capital of the erstwhile princely state in Satara district, has shocked the entire district.

The father, Shankar Shinde, 65, surrendered at Aundh police station on Sunday afternoon. Shinde, early on Sunday, attacked his daughter Asha with an iron implement and a stick. Asha was fast asleep in her room when attacked and died on the spot. Her last rites were performed on Sunday afternoon. Asha had done her BSc in Aundh and master of social work in Satara. She worked with a non-governmental organisation in Pune. Her father is a labour contractor. Youngest among four siblings, Asha has three married sisters and an unmarried brother.

Assistant police inspector, Chandrakant Shirke, who is investigating the case, said, “Asha was in love with a youth from Pune, who belonged to another caste. She kept on rejecting all marriage proposals. Her parents tried convincing her that the family will be looked down upon if she went in for an intercaste marriage.
