The recent news of suicides of young kids did move people in the city and elsewhere. According to news reports in the month of January alone, two kids – an 11-year-old girl and a 13-year-old boy committed suicide for academic reasons. And more such cases continue to be registered.

Artist Rupali Madan — who was affected by the news wants to plead with people not to crush the innocence of kids and drive them to take such disastrous steps — through her work.

Rupali’s ten sculptures in wood and stone portray the innocence of children. She stresses that childhood is the best time in a
person’s life and that no one should ruin this precious time that children have. She says, “Since the last five years I have been teaching kids at an orphanage. I have also been associated for long with special kids. My stint as an art teacher also gave me the opportunity to conduct pottery workshops with kids of reputed schools in the city. I have a small child at my house and it makes you realise that they are truly a source of joy.”

Rupali says it is the responsibility of the elders, especially parents, to guard and protect children. “But unfortunately we have been pressurising them so much recently, especially when it comes to education, that they are getting self-destructive. Elders need to take note of this and work  towards letting kids be kids. I have tried to show all of this through my works,” she says.
