Today's annual Google Doodle celebrates India’s 77th Independence Day 2023. The Google Doodle display is illustrated by New Delhi-based artist Namrata Kumar. A new era began on this date in 1947 when India gained independence from British domination. The Doodle, which was beautifully illustrated by New Delhi-based artist Namrata Kumar, honours India's many textile craft traditions and emphasizes their fundamental significance to the nation's cultural identity.

The idea of "A Tapestry of Indian Textiles" is a concept of the lengthy and varied history of textiles in India. The piece of art displays a patchwork of various Indian textiles.

The artwork emphasizes the fundamental connection of India's textile tradition to the nation's identity by serving as a visual depiction of it. With this idea, Google Doodle wants to honour the many different textile art forms that come from different parts of India, each of which has its distinctive textile traditions.

Kumar's journey began with the discovery of a variety of textile craft forms that are found throughout India. She worked to ensure that the needlework, weaving, printing, and dyeing techniques were fairly represented while maintaining the integrity of the colours and designs. The finished patchwork captures India's rich textile legacy through a beautiful fusion of these various skill types.

The textiles on display at the Doodle, which come from many parts of the country, are evidence of the skilled work of many different weavers, dyers, printers, and embroiderers.

“Indian textiles have held a profound significance in my life, thanks to my mother’s profession as a textile designer. Growing up surrounded by textiles from diverse regions, I developed a deep connection to these craft forms, said Namrata Kumar.

“Now, presented with the opportunity to create the Google Doodle for India’s Independence Day, I see it as the perfect occasion to celebrate the country’s rich and diverse textile traditions. In this artwork, each textile showcased is a testament to the collective craftsmanship of skilled artisans, cultivators, weavers, dyers, printers, and embroiderers. Together, they create these extraordinary textiles that embody the essence of India’s creative spirit.”

An annual flag-raising ceremony with the Prime Minister in attendance is held at Red Fort in Delhi as a representation of this first day of independence. The national anthem is sung by the populace as they remember the freedom movement's pioneers.

A variety of cultural events are performed in schools and neighbourhoods, and children take part in plays and competitions while watching movies about freedom warriors.

On this national holiday, many people opt to spend time with their loved ones, friends, and communities. Don't forget to glance up and find a few tricolour kites soaring high in the sky. Flying kites is a long-standing Independence Day tradition.
