Soft toys, which you so lovingly buy for your kids, are home to dust mites which are known to cause asthma. They can’t be removed even if they are cleaned regularly, warn doctors. So, it is important to help children give up a toy willingly as they grow up, city-based doctors suggest.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), about 40 per cent of the 3 crore asthmatics in India are children below 14 years. Hospital records indicate that 71 per cent children with asthma are below five years of age at the time of first attack. In such a scenario, treating children with asthma is often a bigger challenge for doctors, the toughest part being taking away kids’ favourite plaything: the teddy.

”Everyday, our team has to break many hearts as they have to take away the teddy bears from kids. Stuffed toys are one of the biggest triggers of asthma attack,” said child pulmonary care expert Dr Prity Sharma. “All stuffed toys are loaded with fibres, which trigger wheezing and it is hard to make children part with them.,” the doctor told DNA.

Child psychologists believe the only effective way of making the kids part with old toys is communication. “Children cry like they do on the first day of school and some refuse to take medicines and food. But a little help makes them cope with the situation, which is an important part of our counselling,” a doctor told DNA.

Doctors increasingly take help of asthma care givers, nurse or para-medical staff trained to guide parents deal with lifestyle changes needed to beat asthma attacks.

“Toys are precious to kids and part of their fondest memories when they grow up. We use the blame strategy to achieve the target. To a 46-year-old, we say the pain caused to them or the hospitalization is because of the teddy or stuff toy which is a ‘bad child’, while children who are older, are told about the harms caused by the toy,” the doctor added.
