Savitri Jindal tops the list of the richest Indian women. This year, she saw her wealth rise from $5.8 billion in March 2019 to $6.6 billion in February 2020, which is almost $0.8 billion or 13.8% higher than it was in 2019.

On October 8, Forbes released the list of 100 richest Indians which was expectedly topped by none other than business tycoon Mukesh Ambani, whose approximate net worth according to the publication stands at $88.7 billion.

And while the list included names of India's richest men and women who have either inherited their fortunes or have built it from scratch, regardless of it, it only proves that these businesspersons have it in them to make it to the top. And since we are looking at the list of India's richest, it must be noted that the number of women on the list has remained unchanged, which is great news. However, what is an even better piece of news is that four out of these top 5 richest women in India, saw a rise in their wealth this year.

1. Savitri Jindal, O.P. Jindal Group

Net worth: $6.6 billion

Chairperson of the renowned Jindal Group, that is considered as one of India's leading conglomerates, venturing in the steel, power, cement and infrastructure industries, Savitri Jindal tops the list of the richest Indian women. 

The 70-year-old took over the reins of the company after the death of her husband and founder of the group, Om Prakash Jindal in 2005 in a helicopter crash. 

It was upon Jindal's death that group companies were divided among his four sons. However, it must be noted that it was after Savitri Jindal took over that the company that it saw massive growth in a short span of time. 

In 2020, Savitri Jindal saw her wealth rise from $5.8 billion (March) to $6.6 billion in February 2020, which is almost $0.8 billion or 13.8% higher than it was in 2019. 

2. Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, Biocon

Net worth: $4.6 billion

A self-made businesswoman, Kiran Mazumdar Shaw features second on the list of top 5 richest women in India. Founder and Executive Chairperson Biocon, this year she added $2.22 billion to her wealth, taking her net worth from $2.38 billion in 2019 to $4.6 billion in 2020. 

It must be noted that Biocon has the permission of Indian regulatory bodies to conduct phase 4 trials for its drug Itolizumab, which is being seen as a potential treatment for novel coronavirus. 

3. Vinod Rai Gupta, Havells India

Net worth: $3.55 billion

Founded by Vinod’s late husband Qimat Rai Gupta in 1958 as an electrical trading business, Vinod Rai Gupta and son Anil Rai Gupta took over the reins of the company after the founder's death due to cardiac arrest in 2014. 

Gupta is the only woman on the list who saw her net worth decline this year. She lost about 11.25% of her wealth. Hence, her net worth declined from $4 billion in 2019 to $3.55 billion in 2020. 

4. Leena Tewari, USV India

Net worth: $3 billion

Leena Tewari chairs privately held USV India, which her late father Vithal Gandhi founded and set up in tandem with Revlon in 1961. 

This year, the media-shy heir of the pharma giant, saw a $1.08 billion gain in her net worth, which is a 56.25% raise from her $1.92 billion last year.

However, it must be noted that the $449 million (revenue) company is run by her husband, Prashant.

5. Mallika Srinivasan, Tractors & Farm Equipment

Chairman & Managing Director of Tractors and Farm Equipment Limited, Mallika Srinivasan is number five on the list of India's richest women. 

Her company is the world’s third-largest tractor maker and the moneymaker of the family business. What is to be noted here is that, not only has Srinivasan's net worth grown, but she also moved up six slots on the Forbes’ Richest Indians list since last year.
