Education scam: CBI raids five spots in Meghalaya

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) carried out raids on Friday at five places in Shillong, including the residence and office premises of former education minister and sitting MLA Ampareen Lyngdoh, in the Meghalaya education scam.

The scam relates to alleged manipulation of score sheets in the recruitment of teachers in 2008-09.

Acting on the November 2, 2017 order of the Meghalaya High Court, the CBI had booked Lyngdoh and state’s Additional Chief Secretary P S Thangkhiew over alleged manipulation.

The agency registered an FIR under various sections of Indian Penal Code and the Prevention of Corruption Act related to criminal conspiracy, forgery, criminal breach of trust against Lyngdoh, who was then education minister, and Thangkhiew, a 1984-batch IAS officer, who was principal secretary (education).

The high court had directed to submit its report to the chief secretary within six months from the date of issue of the order. The HC also directed the state to hand over the records relating to the scam to the CBI.

The state police had filed a case relating to alleged mass manipulation, tampering score sheets and interference in selection of assistant teachers in lower primary schools in 2008-09. There were also allegations of fraud and breach of public faith.
