A woman in Andhra Pradesh was set on fire by a man from Vijayawada for rejecting his advances.

The incident took place while the girl was going home after work on Monday night, the police said.

While setting the woman ablaze, the man also suffered burn injuries after she caught hold of him tightly and he couldn't escape. He later succumbed to them at the hospital in Guntur in the wee hours of Tuesday.

Governorpet Police Station Sub-Inspector Durgadevi said, "Nagabhushanam (accused) was hiding nearby. He tried to talk to her, but she refused. There was an argument between them. Following that, he took out petrol from a can he had brought, poured it on her and set her ablaze."

"The girl died on the spot," he said.

The girl belongs to Vissannapeta village and was working as a nurse in a COVID-19 care centre in Vijayawada. She was residing in a room along with a few friends.

According to the police, the boy has been stalking her for some time. The girl had complained against him last week at Governorpet Police Station. However, she withdrew it as he said he would not harm her anymore.

“It was evident that he came prepared to kill her. During the course of argument, he took out a bottle of petrol he had brought with him, poured it over her and set her ablaze. The woman caught hold of him tightly so that he could not escape after killing her. Listening to their cries, neighbours rushed there and separated them before dousing the fire,” Assistant Commissioner of Police M Ramesh was quoted by Hindustan Times as saying.

The police booked a case of murder under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code against the stalker initially and after his death, along with another case under Section 174 of Criminal Procedure Code.
