In a heart-felt tribute to the late tabla maestro Pt Nandanbhai Mehta, founder of Saptak School of Music, his disciples have come together to participate on the prestigious platform of Saptak 2011, aptly titled 'Tarpana'.
The annual 13-day grand festival of classical music in the city begins on January 1.The highlights of this festival are innovative combinations of newer instruments.
Manju Mehta, sitarist and founder member of Saptak said, "The 31st music festival is dedicated to Nandanbhai, hence in keeping with the wishes of his disciples, we have included a majority of them from the city and state who will pay homage to him."
The festival will kick off with an instrumental ensemble with Mehta's student Sapan Anjaria on tabla and Adit Ravi on flute. His daughter and disciple Hetal Mehta will play on the first day of the festival. Hetal will be accompanied by Ravishanker Upadhyay (pakhawaj), and Ikram Khan (sarangi).
"The launch of Atul Desai's book - Biography of Nandan Mehta - on January 10 by Pandit Jasraj, will be followed by the release of a documentary on Mehta's contribution in the field of music," informed Manju.
The finale of the fest's opening day will be Pt.Birju Maharaj's kathak performance accompanied by sarangi and flute.
The coming together of different art forms with the new classical instrument, the flute, will add flavour to the festival and lend a unique air to the occasion.
Legendary artists such as Pt Hariprasad Chaurasia (flute), Pt Ajoy Chakraborty (vocals), Ustad Shujat Khan (sitar), Rashid Khan (vocals), Begum Parveen Sultana (vocals), Pt. Jasraj (vocal), Ustad Shahid Parvez (sitar) and Pt Rajan Mishra (vocals) would perform in festival this year.
Duet sessions of Pt Shivkumar Sharma (santoor) and Ustad Zakir Hussain (tabla) and Pt Vishwamohan Bhatt and Pt A Hariharan, are the major attractions of this festival.
Moreover, the highest participation in this festival is by Mehta's disciples' including local tabla artists like Hetal Mehta, Jajwalya Shukla, Matang Parikh, Munjal Mehta and Nandanbhai's nephew Nihar Mehta. A special performance of tabla by students of the music school would also be presented during the festival.
