In a surprising turn of events, the admission of Alpesh Rathod, a brilliant medical student who belongs to a very poor family, has been cancelled due to some confusion over his caste in his certificate. It is to be noted that Alpesh Rathod has scored 613 out of 720 marks in the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test Undergraduate (NEET-UG) 2022. Alpesh Rathod’s father sell pani puri. Alpesh belongs from Aravalli district. In 2022, after clearing the NEET exam with good marks Alpesh had taken admission in the Vadodara government medical college under the Socially and Economically Backward Classes (SEBC).

But things changed upside down for Alpesh Rathod on September 1, 2023 when his admission was cancelled by the college because the caste certificate which was submitted by Alpesh at the time of admission was rejected by the state government and state admission committee.

After Alpesh Rathod completed his admission formalities in 2022, his caste documents were sent by the state admission committee castes welfare department for verification and there it was found that his caste was mentioned as Teli and this caste does not fall under the SEBC category in Gujarat, reported Times of India. This led the Admission Committee for Professional Undergraduate and Postgraduate Medical Educational Courses to cancel Alpesh Rathod’s admission. According to ToI report, the caste certificate was issued to Alpesh Rathod in 2018 by Meghraj gram panchayat.

Alpesh Rathod has approached the Gujarat high court to save his career and pass an order asking the authorities to convert his seat to general category. During the hearing, the Gujarat HC Justice Nikhil Kariel said that no fraud has been committed by Alpesh and it is a case of simple misreading of legal provisions. The Court has asked the government to find “a via media” to save Alpesh Rathod’s career. “Even if his caste certificate has been cancelled the point is how to save his career,” the judge asked.

“Looking at my good score, I would have easily secured admission in any of the government colleges in the state, had I applied in the open category." Rathod told TOI.
