High drama was witnessed at the head office of Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Wednesday, after two men, suspected of belonging to fringe right-wing organisation Hindu Sena, barged into the premises and allegedly tried to manhandle party General Secretary Sitaram Yechury.
The incident took place while Yechury was just about to enter the Central Committee Hall on the first floor of the CPI(M) office to address the press on conclusion of the party’s two-day politburo meeting.
Witnesses told the police that the two men, identified as Pawan Kumar Kaul, 30, and Upender Kumar, 24, tried to get close to Yechury while raising slogans such as ‘CPI(M) murdabad’ and ‘Hindu Sena zindabad’. Before being handed over to the police, the CPI(M) members thrashed the trespassers.
No case, however, was registered till late on Wednesday. DCP, New Delhi, BK Singh, said, “We have been informed that detained persons are associated with a group called Hindu Sena. Appropriate legal action will be taken against them.”
The CPI(M), whose workers thrashed the two men before handing them over to the police, blamed the RSS for the incident.
Hindu Sena chief Vishnu Gupta said the men, who entered the CPI(M) office posing as journalists, wanted to ‘express their anger’ against the Left party’s alleged criticism of the Indian Army published in its mouthpiece People’s Democracy.
Despite Hindu Sena chief Vishnu Gupta’s claim that the men were there to express their angst over CPI(M)’s criticism of the India Army, the Left party can now cite this incident to strengthen their critic of right wing organisations for being intolerant.
