Soon after David Warner announced his decision to withdraw his appeal for a review of Australia's leadership suspension, the country's cricket body issued a statement expressing their disappointment with Warner's move.

Warner was banned for his role in the Cape Town ball tampering scandal in 2018, but the 36-year-old had hoped that an independent assessment would allow him to be considered to lead the national squad. Following a review by the organization's Head of Integrity, Cricket Australia (CA)  revised its Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel last month.

Under the new rules, players and support staff who have received long-term punishments can petition to have them adjusted if an impartial three-person review panel determines that "extraordinary circumstances exist to justify altering a sentence."

However, the Australia opener took to social media on Wednesday to announce that he had decided to withdraw his application for review, criticising the relevant panel for wanting the hearing to be done in public rather than in private, as he and Cricket Australia preferred.

“Regrettably, I have no practical alternative at this point in time but to withdraw my application. I am not prepared to subject my family or my teammates to further trauma and disruption by accepting a departure from the way in which my application should be dealt with pursuant to the Code of Conduct. Some things are more important than cricket,” Warner posted on his Instagram account.

Cricket Australia responded quickly, saying that their objective "was to offer David the opportunity to justify why his lifetime leadership ban should be changed in an independent hearing."

The governing body said in the statement that they support and appreciate Warner's decision.

“We are disappointed with this outcome as our intention was to give David the opportunity to demonstrate why his lifetime leadership ban should be varied at an independent hearing and we amended our Code of Conduct accordingly. We supported David’s wish for these discussions to be heard behind closed doors and respect his decision to withdraw his application,” the statement read.

“David is a very senior and highly regarded member of the Australian team who has been a great ambassador for the game as a whole since his return from a year-long ban,” it added.

Warner was on the verge of becoming Australia's next ODI captain, but Test skipper Pat Cummins was picked ahead of him, much to everyone's astonishment.
