The rupee fell by 12 paise to 61.66 against the dollar in early trade on Monday at the Interbank Foreign Exchange market due to demand for the US currency from importers.
Forex dealers said besides dollar's gains against other currencies overseas and a lower opening of the domestic equity market also put pressure on the rupee.
The rupee had shed 1 paise to 61.54 against the dollar in Friday's trade.
Meanwhile, the benchmark BSE Sensex fell by 45.15 points, or 0.21%, to 21,018.47 in early trade today.
