He went to school with Sharad Arvind Bobde, a former chief justice of India. Salve worked as a Chartered Accountant in taxation prior to becoming a lawyer. In 1980, he joined JB Dadachandji & Co. as an intern to start his legal profession.

Sushma Swaraj, who was the external affairs minister at the time, tweeted about this in 2017. Kulbhushan Jadhav was sentenced to death by Pakistan for espionage.

The Pakistani government spent more than Rs 20 crore on its attorney to establish Jadha was a spy, but Harish Salve took only a fee of Rs 1 from the Indian government. Through his arguments, Salve was able to defeat Pakistan.
