While Ronaldo is the greatest international goalscorer in the Men’s game, he is nowhere near the top when it comes to football’s best goalscorers across both sets of players
Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are arguably the two greatest goalscorers of all time in football. The two greats who now play in the US and Saudi Arabia have dominated football for years and scored over 100 goals for their respective national teams.
Ronaldo has scored 123 goals for Portugal while Messi has scored 103 goals for Argentina. The two are separated by only one player, Iranian great Ali Daei, who scored 109 goals for his country. But while Ronaldo is the greatest international goalscorer in the Men’s game, he is nowhere near the top when it comes to football’s best goalscorers. In fact, in the complete list of Men’s and Women’s football goal scoring exploits Ronaldo fails to even make the top five.
For starters, the top seven footballers with the most international goals are all women. The greatest international goalscorer is Canadian forward Christine Sinclair. Playing since 2000, she has scored a whopping 190 goals in 322 matches. The second place is taken by US forward Abby Wambach who scored 184 goals in 256 appearances between 2001 and 2015.
US legend Mia Hamm is third with 158 goals in 276 matches between 1987 and 2004. Jordan player Maysa Jbarah is fourth with 133 goals in just 129 matches, scoring more than a goal per game since 2005. Another US ace, Carli Lloyd is fifth with 134 goals in 316 matches between 2005 and 2021.
US' Kristine Lilly is sixth with 130 goals and Germany's Birgit Prinz is seventh with 128 goals. US star Alex Morgan is just behind Ronaldo at ninth with 121 goals. Interestingly, Messi would rank only 18th in the combined list. India star Sunil Chhetri is the fourth greatest Men's football goalscorer with 92 goals.
