Many of the game’s legends have not accomplished the feat. But on Saturday an unassuming Amdavadi golfer achieved it. Surrounded by a picturesque landscape on a golf course that stretches over 7430 yards - the longest in India -Parthiv Mehta on Saturday rewrote Ahmedabad golfing history.

Mehta was participating in the prestigious Mercedes-Benz golf tournament at the Kensville Golf and Country Club, in Ahmedabad. With a lush green carpet beckoning, and striking dunes surrounded by small water bodies threatening from the side, the Ahmedabad-based businessman and amateur golfer struck the most seminal shot in the ancient Scottish game - a hole-in-one. And with this rare feat, he bagged a glittering Mercedes-Benz SLK Class car as prize. Mehta hit the perfect 9 iron tee shot, on the par-3, 11th hole, for a phenomenal hole-in-one.

Holes-in-one are extremely rare triumphs, and while it depends largely on the golfer’s skill, many instances have been recorded when a ball has bounced off a tree, a bird in flight, or even a passing car, before settling into the hole. Golf Digest, the Bible of the sport, has estimated that in amateur play, the chances of a hole-in-one are 1,50,000 to one.

“I am amazed…it feels awesome,” said Mehta, who was on cloud nine. A regular on the Ahmedabad golf circuit, Mehta has been consistent in the longest drive event. “I always tried to improve on my game. Practicing thrice a week, I did aspire to win such an event,” he said.

Meanwhile, Kensville wasted very little time and immediately gave Mehta a lifetime membership.

“A hole-in-one is always a result of talent and luck. But we are delighted that Parthiv achieved it here.”

“He has been doing well in the longest drive and closest to the pin categories. To honour his achievement we have offered him a lifetime membership of the Kensville Golf and Country Club," said Sameer Sinha, managing director, Kensville.

When asked about his passion for cars, Parthiv smilingly uttered, "I am not that crazy about cars. But my father is definitely a car buff. This is a kind of a gift for him. It was he who brought me to golf. But winning a Mercedes gives one an absolutely euphoric feeling."

Besides Ahmedabad, similar qualifying rounds of the Mercedes tournament are being held in Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad, Delhi, Coimbatore, Jaipur, Chennai and Bangalore.
