Southern Command HQ set to archive Army's glory

Be it Liberation of Goa, Indo-Pak wars in 1965 and 1971, or other military operations, Southern Command of the Indian Army has played a significant role in various historical incidents and now this glorious history of the oldest command will be archived by the Indian army. The Southern Command Headquarters has taken up a detailed project of consolidating and archiving the achievements of the command.

The southern command, which is the oldest command of the Indian Army, was established on April 1, 1895. The command, which has its headquarters in Pune, is responsible for conducting military operations over nearly 41 per cent of Indian landmass covering 10 states and four union territories.

The command has played crucial role in various military operations for over 120 years which includes Liberation of Goa in 1961, victory in India- Pakistan war in 1965 and 1971, overseeing Indian Peace Keeping Force operations in Sri Lanka in 1980s and and operations in Maldives.

The glory of Southern Command in these operations will be archived by the headquarters. The command has undertaken detailed study of its history and achievements since foundation. Lt Gen Ashok Singh, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Southern command has appreciated the efforts of the the army officers who are carrying out the study and taking up the task of spreading awareness about the history of Southern Command.
At present, the command comprises 19 military cantonments, 35 military stations and oversees 23 category A major military training establishments of India.
