Mohammad Ajmal Amir’s statement to the police will not be admissible in court. His statement recorded in front of a magistrate before trial begins will be the only admissible evidence in court.

Ajmal has been booked in 12 cases and produced before a magistrate thrice. A magistrate on Wednesday remanded him in police custody till January 6.

The police can seek his custody for 14 days in each case. At present he is in
police custody in connection with the firing at Marine Drive.

Ajmal has no advocate representing him yet. Advocate KBN Lam, however, filed his vakalatnama for Ajmal on Monday. Ajmal is yet to allow Lam to represent him. The police commissioner’s office has asked Lam to wait till December 29.

A couple of days ago Ajmal wrote to Pakistani authorities seeking legal aid. But Rehman Malik, Pakistan’s interior ministry chief, on Thursday said he would get legal aid only if it was proved that Ajmal is a Pakistani national.
