The Hiranandani Group is celebrating the completion of 25 years of its Garden project in Powai. The celebration, which started on December 30, will go on till January 4. The group has also decided to make more of such integrated townships.

As part of the celebration, the group is planning to light up the streets, trees and garden areas in the township.

Founder and chairman of the group Surendra Hiranandani said they feel proud when they look back and see the Powai project, which, he added, is one of the best residential-cum-commercial projects in India.

"Twenty-five years ago, Powai was a barren hilly area. There was no infrastructure, no roads, drainage or water connections. After taking over this 250-acre undeveloped land, we planted almost 1 lakh plants here. Besides constructing houses, we developed gardens, schools, hospitals, and even brought hospitality services. Now, this is one of the best locations to stay in Mumbai," Hiranandani said.

He said they went through a lot of pain and effort to convert the barren land into the vibrant living township it is today. "Earlier, no one used to go Powai, but now it's among the best addresses in the city. We developed many commercial complexes, within the township. Someone who is staying as well as working here does not need to go through the daily local train commute. We feel happy and content when people praise and appreciate our effort and project," he added.

Niranjan Hiranandani, who is the group's co-founder and managing director, said by developing the Powai township, they have raised the bar of standard of living. "We endeavour to give quality life to people residing here. We not only improved the infrastructure but also increased people's wealth who booked apartments in our complex. Initially, we sold the flats at Rs500 per sqft, the rate now is between Rs25,000 and Rs30,000 per sqft. We believe in giving back to society. We also developed the first supermarket in Powai. We honestly paid all government taxes while developing this locality," he said.

He added that prime minister Narendra Modi too wants to develop smart cities in India. "In future, we wish to develop such more townships, where people can live and work comfortably. We believe in the holistic approach of development," he said.
