Though passengers have been showering praise on Mumbai's pride, the latest state-of-the-art T2 terminal at the airport, mosquitoes are posing a lot of discomfort to travellers, especially those taking international flights at night.

Hetal Avlani, a passenger who was at the airport early on Monday morning, tweeted: "Dear CSIA, please do something about the mosquito problem. They are the only things that you have carried over from the old airport."

The airport administration claims the new terminal has clean, environment-friendly buildings and operations that match international standards. On being asked about the mosquitoes in the terminal, an airport spokesman said: "We are already working to mitigate the problem. We have taken all possible steps to keep mosquitoes at bay. Fumigation is being done regularly, and the nallas have been covered among other things."

This is not an isolated of inconvenience at T2, however. UK-based Raitess Rai, in her comment on the well-known air travelling quality portal Skytrax, says: "Very disappointed. Stunning building—experience completely ruined by mosquitoes and dreadful queue management."

Manzar Sayed, an IT professional and a frequent flier to the US and Europe, agrees: "Mosquitoes are still a nuisance, though the swanky airport terminal building is a treat to the eye and is comfortable."

Frequent travellers and airport insiders say that mosquito menace has been a perennial problem. And experts say international passengers have often associated the Mumbai airport with mosquitoes. The huge ring of garbage near the slums surrounding the airport, the construction works going on in the periphery, etc are breeding centres of mosquitoes.
