Egg thieves who stole a truck loaded with eggs worth Rs 5 lacs near Ambernath were arrested by Ulhasnagar police within 72 hours. The accused and his three accomplices committed this robbery as the former was under heavy debt and was trying to make up for it through this loot.
On Thursday, Ulhasnagar crime branch arrested Saadat Ansari, a resident of Bhiwandi, for stealing a truck and kidnapping the driver and his son. The incident took place on November 19 around 3.15am when Mohammed Nabi Shaikh was driving a truck loaded with 1.48 lakh eggs worth Rs 5 lacs on Ambernath Badlapur road.
The eggs were bought from Hyderabad to be delivered to Maharashtra Eggs Centre at Woollen Chawl, Ambernath. When the truck reached T-circle near Green city a four-wheeler stopped in front of it. Four men got down from the car and threatened Shaikh and his son at knifepoint. "They blindfolded the duo a cloth and put them in their car while one of the accused took away the truck with him," says a police official from Ulhasnagar crime branch.
The thieves then took Shaikh and Muzammil to a jungle in Titwala's Rayte area and took away their mobile phone and Rs 2000 cash. Then they dumped them in the jungle and escaped from the spot.
The driver and his son managed to reach the police the next morning and lodged a police complaint. Based on their description of the thieves and about the areas where the thieves took them while being blindfolded, the cops managed to trace the prime accused Saadat. "We caught Saadat from Bhiwandi's Mahapoli village. He confessed that he was under heavy debt and hence, committed the crime to pay the money he owed to others," says the cop.
The cops also recovered the truck, the eggs and the car that was used to commit the crime. While the other three accused in the case are absconding, Saadat will be produced in Kalyan court on Friday for further custody.
