The Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) is yet to receive bone samples from the Khar police linked to the Sheena Bora murder case. It has received the blood samples of Mikhail Bora, Indrani Mukerjea and Indrani's driver Shyamvar Rai. Scientists will run DNA tests on Mikhail and Indrani's blood to establish their relationship.

Until Monday evening, the FSL had not received bones believed to be Sheena's that were handed over by JJ hospital doctors to the police on August 28. "When the bone samples are submitted to the lab, they will be subjected to DNA analysis," said an FSL scientist.

There are two sets of bone samples — first is small pieces of skull, ribs, teeth and hands deposited with the JJ hospital in 2012, and the second is what was dug out by the Mumbai police last week.

"The bones will be crushed and treated with chemicals. The extracted bone cells will be subjected to Polymerase Chain Reaction tests to amplify the DNA. Fifteen locus points on the DNA are studied for markers. There should be a 50% match between the bone samples and DNA extracted from Indrani's blood to establish the maternal relationship. A biological child retains 50% of the mother's DNA and 50% of the father's," explained the scientist.

The FSL results can only determine if the bone samples are related to Indrani in any way. "We can also determine the sex of the person through DNA analysis, but whether they are Sheena's bones or not is a matter of further police investigation," said the scientist.

JJ hospital doctors said they could not determine the sex of the deceased through the bone samples as they were fragmented. "To determine the sex through physical examination, the doctors should have the pelvic girdle and the spine bones in their entirety. In the absence of these, JJ doctors could not opine on the bones," said a doctor from the forensic department at JJ hospital.
