With upcoming general elections, the issue of 27 villages in Dombivli-Kalyan have again gained momentum in Thane district. This time the residents not only want their own municipal corporation, but even 10 growth centres as promised by the BJP led Fadnavis government. For the past few years the residents of 27 villages in Dombivli-Kalyan have been rallying to get an autonomous status. In 2004 they were removed from the KDMC (Kalyan Dombivli Municipal Corporation) jurisdiction and had their own gram panchayats.

However, in 2006 MMRDA (Mumbai Metropolitan Development Authority) was appointed as their planning authority."But MMRDA wasted nine to 10 years to plan our progress and there was practically next to no development in our area," alleges Gulab Vaze, vice president, sangharsh samiti, 27 villages. "We were promised a separate municipal council by state government and we want our demand to be met," said Vaze.

Other than that, the villagers also want 10 growth centres that was promised by chief minister Devendra Fadnavis and Rs 1000 crore fund was also sanctioned for the same. These centres are to come up in Nilje, Katai, Kole, Ghesar, Hedutane, some parts of Mangaon, Dharivali, Usargar, some parts of Bhopar and will provide job opportunities to the locals so that they do not have to come to Mumbai and other surrounding areas. "For last three years we are waiting for these growth centres in our areas. Hope the government give us a good deal," he added.

The third and the most important demand is to regularise the construction. "While MMRDA wasted the past 10 years doing nothing for us, there was a lot of construction in our area sanctioned by the gram panchayats. But for the past one to one and a half years the registration of these constructed houses, buildings, tenements have stopped. We want these constructions to be regularised," he added.

The Samiti have threatened to take action if the demands are not met in time."We will soon decide a future course of action and pursue our issues aggressively. We will also decide whom to vote for accordingly," said Vaze. These villages have a cumulative population of over 3 lakh.
