Cashing in on the bond of friendship forged with a jeweller in Dahisar, after earning his trust over a period of three months, a trio of father and sons allegedly duped him to the tune of Rs3 lakh last month.

The family mortgaged fake gold ornaments on September 22 and got away with the money, the police said. However, the police are hoping to nab the culprits with the help of footage from the CCTVs in the shop.

The Dahisar police on Wednesday registered a case under section 420 (cheating) of the Indian Penal Code.

Proprietor of Ambika Jewellers in Ashokvan, Dahisar (East), Dhanraj Joshi said, “The family has been coming to us for the last three months to mortage their gold. They’ve mortgaged real gold worth lakhs of rupees at least five times, before the September 22 incident. They had earned our trust and befriended me.”

On September 22, Jaipal Seni and his two sons visited the store to mortgage gold pendents and rings. “They were speaking in my native language and claimed to be my neighbours in Dahisar. I blindly trusted them and took their gold against Rs3 lakh,” Joshi said.

However, the jeweller, later, examined the gold and found it to be fake. “The jewellery was gold-plated. I tried calling the three but their phones were switched off and the address they had furnished turned out to be wrong,” he said.

Senior inspector Ansar Pirjade said, “We have deployed a team to nab the three. The CCTV footage should help us. We will arrest them soon.”

The police suspect that the three may have cheated more jewellers in this way. Investigation is on to see whether the trio is part of a larger racket.
