After residents alleged civic apathy towards the SK Patil Garden, stating that the garden was in shambles and in need of urgent repair, its renovation work was finally inaugurated by the local corporator last week.
The angry residents can now rejoice as the corporator promised that the renovation will formally begin within 10 days.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has sanctioned Rs 3 crore for the garden's renovation, claims the Garden Department of BMC. Local BJP corporator from the area, Rita Makwana, along with her party leaders and local residents carried out the inauguration. Makwana claimed that the work would be complete within six months.
Earlier this year, residents had taken to social media platforms like Twitter and Facebook to complain about and bring attention to the garden's bad condition. They had alleged that the children's play area and toiletins are in bad shape and that the garden does not have electricity supply. They had also alleged that the equipment was broken which could lead to a mishap.
When contacted, Makwana said, "I had got this garden repaired twice but now the garden is set to go for a complete renovation and all the procedure is complete. I personally sat through the heritage committee meetings and also got it approved via the standing committee. The garden's renovation work will start within 10 days and we hope it will be completed in six months."
According to Makwana, the new garden will have a better play area for children and ample space for senior citizens including a gazebo. "There was this portion which was unattended and led to mosquitoes increasing in the vicinity. All this will be gone and the renovation will make the garden safe for everyone including children and senior citizens."
Sahebraod Gavit of BMC's Garden Department said, "The proposal for renovation of SK Patil Garden for Rs 3 crore was approved by the corproation."
