Wear it like royalty

There are some basics to comply with while donning this trend. Firstly to break the myth, this silhouette suits all. Fashion designer Anita Dongre explains, “Anarkalis look good on tall people as they do justice to the entire look of the garment.” However, if you are short, there is nothing to be remorseful, she adds, “If you are short, the best option would be calf-length anarkalis as they compliment the height.”

Some dos
It is a great idea for evening wear if you do not want to wear saris or salwar kameez. Ameira Punvani, costume stylist, says, “Since it is the length being played with, floor length anarkalis look elegant in any colour, be it neon shades like pink and yellow or royal hues like oxblood and aubergine.” Another important aspect is that even the embellishments should be to a bare-minimum, she adds, “Focus on the neckline and empire waist line for a neat, elegant look. Experiment with different necklines—replace the boring, round necklines with V-necks, Chinese collars and edgier cuts. While the neckline looks edgy, opt for deep back-lines. A backless anarkali with embroidery around the border flatters the look.”

In terms of fabric, chiffon, silk, satin, georgette give the best fall of the outfit. Nikasha Tawadey, designer says, “Preferably Benarasi embroidery and gota patti work on the net dupattas is what I like to work with. In some of the other styles I enjoy using gold thread work and kundan work on the yoke of the anarkali. The silhouettes are mainly empire waist with an A-line bottom.”

However, designer Anita strongly recommends ankle-length anarkalis, while the rest feel floor length are comfortable to carry. Ameira adds, “Replace the clichéd dupattas with embroidered jackets and waistcoats, it gives a fresh, yet traditional look to the outfit.”

Some don’ts
However, there are some strict don’t we need to follow while dressing in an anarkali. Keep the accessories to a bare minimum. Manish Malhotra, designer says, “An anarkali adds volume and drama.

Keep everything minimal and let the garment do the talking.” Nikasha warns, “It’s best to avoid wearing flats with an anarkali, especially since we’re talking about a floor length style. Adding height to one’s body gives you a better posture as well as makes the look more ethereal. So opt for delicate heels, in a single colour.”

Petite body frames should avoid too much flare as it may drown you in the fabric; the ghera should be kept to a minimum. Ameira adds, “Avoid embroidery all over the kurta. Don’t go for short sleeves as it distracts from the design and flow of the outfit. Since the star of the ensemble should be your anarkali, accessorise with a ring or earrings.”
