The world is an oyster for intrepid ‘gastronauts’ who will do anything to have their favourite fare. While adventurous globe-trotting chef Anthony Bourdain may regularly devour a cobra’s heart and sea urchins during his culinary journeys, our own celebs with a penchant for their favourite food reach out to far-flung places to have their favourite fare.

Ask winery owner Kavita Chougule and she talks of her Cape Town culinary tryst. “It was on a wine tour there that I ate at a place called Spring Box; it had the best exotic meat,” she smiles. Frequent business trips to London with hubby Vickrant see them book a dinner table at Hakkasan. “For divine lobster,” she says, rolling her eyes.

For builder Niranjan Hiranandani, it’s Nobu that draws him time and again to London with daughter Priya and his grandchildren. “It has a great atmosphere and superb cuisine, especially the grilled asparagus with red chilli shiso salsa,” he says.

Globe-trotting couture couple Pradeep and Neha Hirani say a chance conversation on a plane pointed them to a little restaurant called La Musa, set in a rustic, village ambience, about 100km from Barcelona. “You know, they cook the same way they did 200 years ago. The food there is to die twice over for,” they say.

Truffle delights lure designer Haseena Jethmalani and husband Mahesh to Italy. “We always go to Procacci in Florence for a delicious sandwich called tartofino, served with white truffle paste,” she says.

Udayan Bose, chairman, Thomas Cook India and Tamara Capital, admits that his penchant for roast duck sees him flying regularly to a place called China Tang in London. “Also, every six months I must head to Kolkata, to an eatery called 6 Ballygunge Place. They make a fantastic shutki macch (dry fish)... it’s my favourite.”

Adman Suhel Seth enjoys a mixed palate. “I love to fly to London to Kai for lunch and dinner. And,” he smiles, “I’d kill to have the Iranian cuisine at Alounak. Even when I’m busy I have to make time for a trip to Angelo’s Pizzas on 57th Street, NY.” Seth has an Indian desire too. “That’s at Mughal Mahal in Delhi; they have the finest butter chicken known to man or beast there,” he smiles.
