Specially-abled shine in Abilympics

Success is always inspirational, especially when it is attained by physically challenged persons. As many as 15 physically challenged youths from the city, who took part in the national zonal-level competition of Abilympics, won various medals.

A special event, Abilympics, is organised every year by the Union government, which is a competition based upon vocational skills of challenged persons. National zonal-level (west zone) competition of Abilympics was held at Nashik sometime back, in which 15 physically challenged youths from Surat won gold and silver medals. They were part of the 400 physically challenged from Gujarat, Maharashtra and Goa.

Out of the 15, six were from Gandhi Engineering College, five from Disabled Welfare Trust and four from Cooperative Viklang Society. They won gold and silver medals in events like fashion designing, dress making, computer engineering, language skills, sports and others.

"This is a very important event for us because it gives us a platform to show our talent at the national level. I won gold in fashion designing and silver in tailoring at the competition.
We were given four hours to show our skill and judges liked my work," Mustak Malek, a physically challenged youth from Gandhi Engineering College, said.

"Achievement in this competiton has opened many opportunities for me and I am eager to work with some good fashion designer or apparel company," he added. After winning at zonal level, Mustak will perform at the national level in Jabalpur this year and at an international event in South Korea in 2011. "Job opportunities are very few for us and this kind of event develops inner abilities for people like us,”  Desal Pandit, a physically challenged youth, said.

Desal has won gold medal in English text processing and silver in web designing. Other youths who won gold medals include Jagdish Patel in electrical assembly, Istiaq Khan in PC assembly, Rafiq Sheikh in tax processing (English) and Vipul Lukhi in computer programming.
