HYDERABAD: The main accused in the sensational murder of television newsreader Lakshmi Sujata on Feb 10 in Vijayawada was arrested in Bangalore on Thursday.
G Chandrasekhar alias Chandu, 26, a makeup man and a colleague of Sujata, was arrested by Bangalore police and was being taken to Vijayawada, said the city's police commissioner CV Anand.
It was jealousy that allegedly led to the murder of 24-year-old B Lakshmi Sujata, a newsreader for private television channel Teja, who was found dead in a pool of blood in a lodge in Vijayawada on Saturday.
Investigations revealed that Sujata was friendly with Chandu, who thought she was in love with him. He used to buy costly gifts for her and spent huge amounts of money on her. However, she befriended others when she joined the FM radio station of the same channel as a RJ six months ago.
She reportedly started ignoring Chandu's calls, which enraged him, said a police official.
Last week when Sujata had gone to her native Gudivada town near Vijayawada, he phoned her and offered to give Rs 50,000 as she was in need of money.
Chandu and his roommate Ravi, a barber by profession, reached Vijayawada and checked in a lodge. Sujata, who told her family that she was returning to Hyderabad, checked into the same lodge.
Ravi, who was picked up in Guntur on Wednesday, told police that Chandu raped her after mixing intoxicants in her food and even asked him to do the same in retribution. The duo then gagged her mouth and stabbed her repeatedly. They had increased the volume of the television set to drown her cries for help.
After committing the crime, Ravi went to Tenali while Chandu returned to Hyderabad and attended duty for two days before going underground.
