US visit, Day 1: PM Modi to meet Kamala Harris, Australian-Japan PM, global CEOs

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is on a three-day visit to the United States to attend the Summit of Quad leaders. In Washington, PM Modi will also address the United Nations General Assembly.

On Wednesday, PM Modi arrived at the Joint Base Andrews in Washington DC amid a crowd of Indian Americans chanting his name and waving the Indian flag, and giving him a warm welcome.

Despite heavy rains since early in the morning on Wednesday, a significant number of Indian Americans had gathered at the Andrews Joint Airforce Base to welcome the Indian Prime Minister.

PM Narendra Modi was received at the airport by senior officials of the Joe Biden Administration and India's Ambassador to the US Taranjit Singh Sandhu. 

"Grateful to the Indian community in Washington DC for the warm welcome. Our diaspora is our strength. It is commendable how the Indian diaspora has distinguished itself across the world," PM Modi tweeted.

What is expected from PM Modi in US?

PM Modi has called this an occasion to strengthen strategic partnership with the US and consolidate ties with Japan and Australia.

He will review the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership and exchange views on regional and global issues of mutual interest.

Meeting with various heads of state would provide an opportunity to take stock of the outcomes of a virtual summit held in March.

PM Modi will meet US President Joe Biden, Prime Minister Scott Morrison of Australia, and Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga of Japan.

Modi said the meetings will help identify priorities for future engagements based on their shared vision for the Indo-Pacific region.

The Afghanistan situation after the takeover of the Taliban and its implications will be discussed in length during the meeting of the leaders.

China's growing assertiveness, ways to stem radicalism, and cross-border terrorism will remain some of the main topics of discussion.

Further expansion of the India-US global partnership is expected to be the central focus of the meeting between PM Modi and President Biden on September 24.

PM Modi will be accompanied by a high-level delegation including External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and National Security Adviser Ajit Doval.

PM Narendra Modi is also scheduled to meet the US Vice President Kamala Harris whose mother hails from the Southern state of India.

The talks between both the leaders will centre around the objective to explore opportunities for cooperation, particularly in the area of science and technology. 

The Prime Minister is also scheduled to meet a number of top executives of major American companies in Washington.

As per news agency ANI, this meeting includes the heads of Qualcomm, Adobe, Blackstone, General Atomics and First Solar.

PM Narendra Modi will travel to New York on September 24 and address the United Nations General Assembly the next day.

Modi's speech will be centred on global challenges including the COVID-19 pandemic, the need to combat terrorism, climate change and other important issues.
