Senior Congress leader and Lok Sabha MP Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday slammed the government over China’s new official map, saying that the entire Ladakh knows that China has transgressed. Gandhi called the new standard map released by China a “very serious” issue.

"I have been saying for years that what the PM said, that not one inch of land was lost in Ladakh, is a lie. The entire Ladakh knows that China has transgressed. This map issue is very serious. They have taken away the land. PM should say something about it,” Rahul Gandhi said on Wednesday.

Beijing’s recently released new edition of “standard map” has been met by strong backlash from India. While Opposition leaders have hit out at the Centre, the government has also lodged a strong protest. The Ministry of External Affairs rejected claims made by Beijing in the so-called "standard map", adding that Beijing has no basis to claim India's territory. Such steps from the Chinese side would only complicate the resolution of the boundary question, it added.

“We have today lodged a strong protest through diplomatic channels with the Chinese side on the so-called 2023 "standard map” of China that lays claim to India's territory. We reject these claims as they have no basis. Such steps by the Chinese side only complicate the resolution of the boundary question,” Ministry of External Affairs official spokesperson Arindam Bagchi was quoted as saying.

Beijing released the map on August 28 showing Arunachal Pradesh and Aksai Chin as part of Chinese territory. China claims Arunachal Pradesh as South Tibet while it had occupied Aksai Chin in the 1962 war. The new map also claims Taiwan and the disputed South China Sea as China’s territory.
