Soon after Chinese President Xi Jinping backed out of attending the G20 Summit in New Delhi this year, the administration of China has given its unwarranted advice on the India vs Bharat renaming row in the country, which has sparked a major political battle.

China said that India has the opportunity to use the upcoming G20 Summit as a way to “enhance the country’s international presence”, and it should keep its focus fixed on “more important issues” rather than the rebranding of India to Bharat.

In a report published in Global Times, the Chinese administration said, “What matters is whether India can comprehensively reform its economic system, which can be traced back to before 1947, when the nation became independent."

China further said through its national mouthpiece, “Without revolutionary reform, India cannot achieve revolutionary development.” The Chinese media further stated that "a name change reflects an effort to eliminate what it sees as colonial-era names."

The Global Times report further stated, “The Modi administration has been one of the most ambitious governments in India in terms of economic reforms since 1991, when India started major reforms to liberalise its economy. Unfortunately, India is increasingly shifting toward trade protectionism.”

Issuing an advice on the G20 Summit to New Delhi, China said, “India should use the G20 presidency to demonstrate its determination to reform its economy, expand its openness, attract foreign investment, and provide a fair business environment for foreign investors - and also gradually implement these measures.”

This comes just days after the India vs Bharat renaming row erupted in the country, after the G20 dinner invites were sent out to foreign leaders with the header ‘President of Bharat’, sparking a major backlash from the opposition INDIA alliance.

In the past, many BJP leaders have demanded that the name of India be changed to Bharat to end the colonial connotation behind the country’s name, while the Opposition has argued that the renaming could be unconstitutional.
