Dense fog holds up Northern Railway region; at least 25 Delhi-bound trains running late

As the Delhi and the surrounding northern capital region (NCR) reel under a cold wave, a dense fog has now blanketed the Northern Railway region and clogged the operations of railways. As many as 25 Delhi-bound trains are running late from one to six hours, it was reported on Tuesday, on account of low visibility.

According to the Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) of the Northern Railways, trains that are running late today include — Chennai - Delhi Duronto Express (12269), Puri - New Delhi Purushottam Express (12801), Varanasi - New Delhi Kashi Vishwanath (KV) Express (14257), Rewa - Delhi REWA ANVT Express (12427), and Howrah - New Delhi Poorva Express (12303).

The low visibility due to the fog had also affected railway operations in the Northern Railway region on Monday as many as 14 Delhi-bound trains were running late by one to over five hours a day earlier.

On the wee hours of Tuesday, the temperature recorded in Delhi was at 10.6 degrees Celsius in Safdarjung and 9.6 degrees Celsius in Palam. Visibility ranged from 250 meters to 500 meters in Palam and Safdarjung respectively. The met department has predicted that very light rains are feasible in isolated places.

The air quality, however, remained poor in Delhi, as the Air Quality Index (AQI) ranged from 326 (in the 'Very Poor' category) to 217 (in the 'Poor category) in Chandni Chowk and Ayanagar respectively. Overall, the Delhi AQI remained at 283 in the 'Poor' category.

AQI was recorded at 323 ('Very Poor' category) in Noida and 270 ('Poor' category) in Gurugram. The dense fog has also blanketed parts of Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) confirmed.
