Delhi will soon be witnessing the winter season and along with it comes the high levels of pollution and smog in the air. Thus, the national capital government has decided to impose a ban on firecrackers till next year, with the intention to control the level of pollution.

The Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC), on September 28, decided to order a complete ban on the sale and bursting of firecrackers in the national capital till January 1, 2022, to curb the pollution. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal also said that this move was essential to save lives.

The DPCC order states that large-scale celebrations and bursting of firecrackers can lead to another surge in the number of COVID-19 cases and will result not only in agglomeration of people in violation of social distancing norms but also a high level of air pollution leading to serious health issues in Delhi.

The DPCC order on firecrackers states, “There will be a 'complete ban on bursting and sale of all kinds of firecrackers up to 1.1.2022 in the territory of NCT of Delhi.” The order also states that under the current pandemic situation, the bursting of crackers can lead to respiratory and other health issues.

To further implement this move in the national capital, the Delhi anti-pollution body has asked all the district magistrates, deputy commissioners of police, and other authorities to implement the directions and submit daily action-taken reports to it.

The Delhi government, a few days back, had also recommended all the neighboring states to shift their public transport systems present in the National Capital Region to CNG, and resort to the promotion of electric vehicles. It has also urged other states to impose a ban on firecrackers.

The Delhi government had imposed a ban on firecrackers from November 9 to 30 to avoid pollution during the festive season, but people were seen flouting the ban as the Air Quality Index of Delhi reached 414, which falls under the ‘severe’ category.
