COVID vaccine data: How many people tested positive after first and second dose?

The government on Wednesday shared data of the number of people who tested positive for novel coronavirus after receiving the first and second dose of Covid-19 vaccines - Covaxin and Covishield.

As per the data, more than 21,000 people tested positive for COVID-19 after taking the first dose of either Covishield or Covaxin, while over 5,500 contracted the infection after taking the second dose, the Centre said.

This data on infection breakthrough was released by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).

Addressing a press conference, ICMR Director General Balram Bhargava said 0.04 percent of people, who received the second dose of Covaxin, were positive for COVID-19, while 0.03 percent who took the second dose of Covishield, contracted the infection.

Covaxin data

So far, 1.1 crore doses of Covaxin have been administered. Out of which, 93 lakh received the first dose and out of that 4,208 people got the infection which is four per 10,000 individuals.

About 17,37,178 people received the second dose of which only 695 tested positive for COVID-19, Bhargava said.

The proportion of people testing positive thus is 0.04 percent after the first dose, and 0.04 percent after the second dose.

Covishield data

Of Covishield, 11.6 crore doses have been given. 10 crore received the first dose and 17,145 people contracted the infection.

About 1,57,32,754 individuals took the second dose of Covishield and of that 5,014 got infected.

The proportion of people testing positive is 0.02 percent after the first dose, and 0.03 percent after the second dose.

According to the data, 5,709 people contracted the infection after the second dose of either of the two vaccines. "This is a very small number and not at all worrisome," Bhargava said.

Active COVID cases double of last year

The Union Government on Wednesday said that there are more than 21.57 lakh active Covid cases in the country, which is double the maximum number of active cases India had last year.

As per the government data, states having more than one lakh active cases are Maharashtra (6.85 lakh), Uttar Pradesh (2.23 lakh), Karnataka (1.59 lakh), Chhattisgarh (1.26 lakh) and Kerala (1.18 lakh).
