Just days after Russian President Vladimir Putin canceled on coming to India for the G20 Summit in Delhi, Chinese President Xi Jinping has also backed out from coming to the national capital, and the delegation will be led by Chinese Premier Li Qiang instead.

It is almost certain that Chinese President Xi Jinping is going to skip the G20 summit in India next week and Premier Li Qiang is set to represent China at the conclave, people familiar with the development said on Saturday, as per PTI reports.

Earlier, Vladimir Putin had conveyed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi that he would not be attending the G20 Summit in Delhi as he had to keep his focus on the ‘special military operation’ in Ukraine, also skipping out on the G20 Summit in Bali last year in November.

“The Chinese President is not travelling to India for the G20 Summit,” said one of the people cited above, adding that Premier Li is likely to represent China at the Summit. President Xi is also skipping the ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) and East Asia summits in Jakarta next week.

While tensions continue to run high between India and China over the escalations at the Line of Actual Control (LAC), Xi Jinping and PM Modi interacted in South Africa last month during the BRICS summit, where the committee entered six new countries as members this year.

PM Modi had expressed concern to the Chinese president over the situation at the LAC, while the former had said that the improvement of India-China relations “serves the common interests of the two countries and the people.”

Meanwhile, other prominent world leaders including US President Joe Biden, Canadian PM Justin Trudeau, and French President Emmanuel Macron have confirmed their presence in Delhi for the G20 Summit, which will be conducted on September 9 and 10 this year.
