Bhai Dooj is celebrated on the fifth day of Diwali and marks the end of the auspicious festival of light. This year it is being celebrated on November 16.

The festivities of this day are similar to that of Raksha Bandhan where sisters apply red tikka, perform an aarti, and pray for their brother's well-being and get gifts from them.

The festival of Bhai Dooj is celebrated on the second date of Shukla Paksha in Kartik month.

Why is Bhai Dooj celebrated?

Legend says that Yamraj (God if death) was called by his sister Yamuna several times to meet him, but Yamraj could not go. But when he came to meet his sister one day, his sister was very happy and she welcomed him, treated him with love and respect, prepared a variety of food recipes, and wished him well by applying tilak. Being happy, Yamraj asked sister Yamuna to ask for a boon - then Yamuna asked to mark out a day each year when he would come to visit her house every year.

Therefore, every year brothers go to their sisters' house, and celebrate their kinship.
