An online system would be able to provide relief to millions of people around the world who stutter, claim Australian experts.

After winning a federal grant of nearly $5 million, the Australian Stuttering Research Centre in Sydney is all set to develop a system that sufferers can access via the internet.

The simple program has cured pre-schoolers in 12 weeks, reports The Sydney Morning Herald.

''Parents ask kids every now and then to say what they just said without the stutter,'' centre director professor Mark Onslow said. ''It works amazingly well but the problem is that there aren't enough speech pathologists to deal with all the kids who are stuttering.''

If the condition is not treated, it can cause psychological problems and make learning difficult, the expert added.

''Sixty per cent of our patients have got social phobia, which is a morbid and prepossessing fear that you will be humiliated and embarrassed,'' he said.
