It is a part of the social norm today — folks stepping out for dinner, to the disco or a social gathering, and enjoying a drink as part of the night’s activities. But that seemingly innocuous deed might change your life as the recent case of 27-year-old stylist Nooriya Haveliwala, who was involved in a deadly car accident last week after allegedly consuming over-the-prescribed-limit of alcohol, shows.

This incident ‘woke up’ nightclub owner Rishi Acharya. He says, “It’s unfortunate that I didn’t do anything about it earlier. Now, I have tied up with Dial-A-Drive valet services. I’m going to put my foot down and get my patrons to take the service. The folks often feel they are OK to drive, but they’re actually not. It’s a small start but I’m hoping more like-minded people join in.”

Sameer Chhabria, business head of Tetsuma and Prive nightclubs, says youngsters in the age group of 21-25 are the ones often seen at nightclubs. “They party like mad and can get out of hand. What we have done is sign up Party Hard Drivers — a valet service that drives a guest home in his or her car. If a guest books a table, the service is free of cost,” he says.

For actor Shenaz Treasurywala being on the city roads in today’s times stresses her out. “The driving etiquette shows the selfishness and aggression in our society and it’s getting worse.

People must be responsible and not drive if they’ve been drinking. Just assign one person who’s not drunk as the designated driver for the night. Everyone thinks they have control but the truth is our reflexes are weak under the influence of alcohol and there are other maniac drivers out there.”

Young businessman Sidhartha Mallya has a social message. “If you are going to drink, make sure you don’t drive at all. Not only are you putting yourself at risk but other motorists too. I think drunk driving is not only an incredibly dangerous thing to do, but an incredibly selfish one as well. Being young and carefree is one thing, but being drunk and careless is another,” he ends.
