Dulquer Salmaan’s much-awaited movie King Of Kotha finally hit the theatres on August 24. The movie opened to a thunderous response from the moviegoers making it the second highest opener in Malayalam cinema history. 

As per the tracking website Sacnilk, Dulquer Salmaan’s King Of Kotha has secured a great start emerging as the second-highest opener ever in Malayalam cinema. The movie collected Rs 7.05 crore at the box office on day 1. These numbers include Malayalm-5.85 crore, 0.85 crore in Telugu language, and 0.35 crore in Tamil language. The movie fell behind by a small margin from the highest opening Malayalam film Odiyan which earned Rs 7.10 crores on day 1. 

With 67% occupancy rate in Kochi and 53.65% in Kerala, the opening numbers of Dulquer Salmaan’s film are overwhelming. The movie collected Rs 16.8 crore worldwide and the performance of the actor is also being well appreciated by the audience. The movie experienced robust pre-sales in Kerala, setting the record for the highest pre-release sales ever for a Malayalam film. The film’s final advance booking sales for day 1 stood at Rs 3 crore by Wednesday midnight. This includes sales of Rs 2.67 crore in Malayalam Rs 27 lakh and Rs 10 lakh in Telugu and Tamil respectively.

Helmed by debutant director Abhilash Joshiy, King Of Kotha stars Dulquer Salmaan, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Ritika Singh, Shabeer Kallarakkal, and Dhruv Vikram among others in key roles. Release on August 24, the movie received a positive response from the audience. 

The gangster mystery revolves around the story of Ravi's son Tony who is torn between his inherited legacy and his desire for a different life. Unlike his father, Tony isn't drawn to the dark world of crime. Instead, he falls in love with a woman from a wealthy background.

Talking about making big-budgeted visual spectacular like King Of Kotha, Dulquer Salmaan told PTI, “In the current climate, people want theatrical experience. In Malayalam, we do so much of smaller, intimate realistic storytelling... I was like, ‘You need to draw people to theatres. They should come and celebrate’. It should be visually spectacular and technically sound.”
