Dulquer Salmaan's King of Kotha is expected to break all opening day collection records in Malayalam cinema history.
King of Kotha, Dulquer Salmaan’s pan India action film, is all set for release. The film has generated some good buzz across the country with the advance booking figures for the Malayalam version going through the roof. Domestically, the film is all set to have the best opening for a Malayalam film ever and it may spring a few surprises overseas as well.
King of Kotha is set to release in theatres on Thursday, August 24. As per Sacnilk, the film’s final advance booking sales for day 1 stood at Rs 3 crore by Wednesday midnight. This includes sales of Rs 2.67 crore in Malayalam and Rs 27 lakh and Rs 10 lakh in Telugu and Tamil respectively. The film will also be releasing in Hindi and Kannada but there was no advance booking for these two dubs. This figure remains one of the highest advance bookings for a Malayalam film in India.
King of Kotha is expected to beat the two highest-opening films in Malayalam – KGF Chapter 2 (Rs 7.25 crore) and Odiyan (Rs 7.10 crore). As per trade sources, King of Kotha should be looking at an 8-crore opening day, a first in Malayalam cinema history. The all-India opening could be over Rs 10 crore, given Dulquer’s popularity in the Telugu states. The actor starred in Telugu blockbuster Sita Ramam recently.
Globally, the biggest opening day for a Malayalam film is the Rs 19.50 crore earned by Mohanlal’s National Award-winning period piece Marakkar : Lion of The Arabian Sea. Dulquer’s Kurup is at the second place with a Rs 18.50 crore opening day. King of Kotha is expected to surpass both of them. Sacnilk reports that the film is expected to gross over $1 million (Rs 8 crore) in the overseas market on its first day and register a worldwide opening gross of over Rs 20 crore.
Directed by Abhilash Joshiy, King of Kotha also stars Aishwarya Lekshmi, Prasanna and Nyla Usha in pivotal roles. The action thriller is Dulquer’s biggest and most ambitious film to date.
