Keeping in trend with other states and classes, the Gujarat government has decided to reopen the schools for the students in the state studying from classes 6 to 8. In its announcement on Saturday (February 13), the state government said it will reopen the schools from February 18 but the attendance will not be compulsory as the online classes are going to continue.

The state government's move was taken to safeguard the long-term interests of the students of these classes, as the coronavirus cases in the state have declined. Still, the schools will adhere to strict COVID-19 safety protocols and guidelines as they resume physical classes for students of classes 6 to 8. Masks and physical distancing will be mandatory for teachers and students in schools.

It is to be noted that the state government earlier reopened schools for classes 10 to 12 and colleges for final year students of undergraduate and postgraduate students from January 11. It later resumed classes for students in classes 9 to 11 from February 1 and for the first-year students in college from February 8.

The government has decided to keep the schools in containment zones closed. In its order, the state government made it clear that the consent of parents will be required for the students to attend physical classes and that the attendance in the schools will not be mandatory.

The district education officers and primary education officers are responsible for ensuring that the reopening schools would comply with the standard operating procedures and protocols to prevent the spread of coronavirus infections.

According to reports and data, the state of Gujarat has recorded 2,64,718 COVID-19 cases thus far. At the same time, it has reported 4,400 deaths due to coronavirus.
