Matheesha Pathirana, the rising cricket star from Sri Lanka, has showered accolades on Chennai Super Kings' captain, MS Dhoni, for his pivotal role in shaping Pathirana's growth as a bowler. At the age of 20, Pathirana has made remarkable strides in recent months, most notably during his sensational performance for CSK in the Indian Premier League earlier this year.

Pathirana expressed gratitude for the confidence instilled in him by Dhoni, which has significantly boosted his cricketing career. "Receiving such unwavering support from a player of his caliber has propelled my career forward. His belief in me made me believe I could achieve anything," Pathirana shared.

Reflecting on the valuable lessons he gleaned from the former Indian World Cup-winning captain, Pathirana emphasized Dhoni's humility as a key factor in his success. He also drew inspiration from Dhoni's unparalleled fitness at the age of 42. "Dhoni has taught me a lot. His humility is a big part of his success. His remarkable fitness at 42 is truly inspiring. When I joined the team, I was young and relatively unknown, but through their training and guidance, I learned numerous aspects of the game," Pathirana explained.

Pathirana continued, sharing the advice Dhoni imparted to him. "Now, I understand how to excel in T20 matches and manage my four overs effectively. Dhoni advised me to maintain a healthy body to avoid injuries, ensuring that I can contribute significantly to the team and the nation.

Interestingly, in a past encounter during this season's IPL against Mumbai Indians, Dhoni had suggested that Pathirana should avoid playing red-ball cricket to manage his workload. Dhoni's words were, "I feel he should not play red-ball cricket, not even get close to it, even play only ICC tournaments with ODIs and keep the rest as minimal as possible because he’s not someone who’ll change a lot.

Currently playing for Colombo Strikers in the Lanka Premier League, Pathirana has emerged as the leading wicket-taker of the ongoing season, had an impressive tally of 12 wickets. His bowling action, often compared to former Sri Lankan pacer Lasith Malinga's, sets him apart.

Pathirana shared his continuous efforts to refine his technique and delivery. "I am constantly striving to enhance my action and bowling skills. Lasith Malinga was pleased when he met me, as he saw similarities between us," Pathirana, also known as "Baby Malinga," revealed
