India vs New Zealand: Shikhar Dhawan beats Sourav Ganguly, levels with Brian Lara for this special record

Shikhar Dhawan became the second fastest Indian to 5,000 One-Day International (ODI) runs, in terms of the number of innings, during the first ODI between India and New Zealand on Wednesday. 

Dhawan, who needed 118 innings to reach the landmark, beat former Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly (126 innings). Virat Kohli remains the fastest Indian to 5K ODI runs as he achieved it in 114 innings. 

The Indian opener Dhawan has levelled with West Indian legend, Brian Lara, who also reached 5K ODI runs in 118 innings. 

Meanwhile, Hashim Amla remains the fastest to the milestone (101 innings) ahead of Viv Richards and Kohli (114 innings).

Dhawan and Rohit have given India a flying start in their chase of 158 in the first ODI as they are 36 for no loss in eight overs. 

Earlier, India bowled with clinical precision to bundle out New Zealand for a paltry 157 in the first One-day International here Wednesday.

Wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav was the most successful bowler for India, returning figures of 4 for 39 in 10 overs, while seamer Mohammed Shami finished with an excellent 3 for 19 in six overs. There were also two wickets for leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal.

Captain Kane Williamson top-scored for the hosts with 64 off 81 balls at the McLean Park.
