Bangladesh staged an impressive comeback, defeating Afghanistan by a commanding 89 runs in a thrilling encounter at the Asia Cup 2023 in Lahore on Sunday. After suffering a devastating loss to Sri Lanka in their first match, this tie was a must-win for Bangladesh.

Opting to bat first, Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Najmul Hossain Shanto showcased their batting prowess, each scoring a century, propelling Bangladesh to a formidable total of 334/5 in their allotted 50 overs. Mehidy, who was promoted to open the innings, displayed exceptional skill and determination, smashing 112 runs off 119 deliveries before being forced to retire hurt. Shanto, on the other hand, contributed a brilliant 104 runs off 105 balls before being run-out. Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan also played a crucial role, finishing strong with an unbeaten 32 runs off just 18 balls.

In response, Afghanistan faced an early setback as Shoriful Islam dismissed Rahmanullah Gurbaz for just 1 run off 7 deliveries. Rahmat Shah and Ibrahim Zadran then steadied the innings, forging a solid partnership of 78 runs for the second wicket. However, Taskin Ahmed ended Shah's innings at 33 runs off 57 balls, breaking the partnership. Ibrahim continued to impress, scoring a well-earned 75 runs off 74 deliveries, until his stay in the middle was abruptly ended by a remarkable one-handed catch by Mushfiqur Rahim.

Despite the efforts of Hashmatullah Shahidi, who contributed a valuable 51 runs off 60 balls, Afghanistan struggled to maintain momentum. Eventually, they were bundled out for 245 runs in 44.3 overs, with Rashid Khan being the final batsman to be dismissed.
