While the Tata Group is one of the most successful conglomerates in India, not many people know much about the family tree. Businessman Ratan Tata’s father was Naval Tata, who was adopted into the multi-billion dollar net worth business family.
Naval Tata was born in a middle-class family in Ahmedabad, but his family’s financial conditions worsened when his father died. His mother was making minimal income while working as a embroiderer and had no means to support her son.
Due to his family’s adversities, Naval found himself in the JN Petit Parsi Orphanage. His luck turned when he caught the eye of Navajbai, the wife of Indian businessman Ratanji Tata. The Tata family soon invested in his education and sent him to London for studies.
After growing up and taking over the family business, Naval Tata had two sons from his first wife – Ratan Tata and Jimmy Tata. Naval Tata later married a Switzerland based businesswoman Simone and fathered his third son Noel Tata.
Naval Tata and his second wife Simone Tata led a luxurious lifestyle, living in a massive mansion and spreading the business internationally. However, staying true to his roots in the Tata family, Naval Tata continued philanthropy and contributed a lot to the less fortunate.
Naval Tata’s wife Simone Tata is the stepmother of former Tata Sons Chairman Ratan Tata, and is also the name behind famous makeup brand Lakme, which is India’s leading make up company. Not just this, but popular store Westside is also the brainchild of Simone Tata.
Now, Naval and Simone Tata’s son and Ratan Tata’s step brother Noel Tata runs the parent company of Westside – Trent. Noel Tata is also responsible for running several other Tata Group brands such as Zudio, Utsa and Star.
