Born on June 26, 1873, in Uttar Pradesh’s Azamgarh, Gauhar Jaan was the first Indian singer to become recording superstar. Gauhar Jaan was the first Indian singer whose songs were recorded at 78rpm. This record was released by the famous gramophone company of India. At the end of every recording, Gauhar Jaan would say in English, 'My Name is Gauhar Jaan'. According to reports, when the price of 10 gram gold was Rs 20, Gauhar Jaan used to charge Rs 3000 for recording a song in in her time. If we adjust this amount to today's inflation, it will come to around Rs 1 crore per song.

Gauhar Jaan was a Christian by birth and her real name was Angelina Yoward. Gauhar Jaan was actually of Armenian origin. Her mother Victoria Hemmings was a skilled singer and dance and she was born in India. Gauhar Jaan had inherited the skills of music and dancing from her mother. Gauhar's grandfather was British while her grandmother was Hindu. His father's name was William Yoward. Gauhar Jaan’s parents got separated in 1879, when she was just 6. After divorce from her husband, Gauhar's mother came to Banaras with a man named Khursheed. After coming to Banaras, Gauhar Jaan’s mother converted to Islam.

After accepting Islam, Gauhar’s mother Victoria changed her name to 'Malka Jaan', and she changed her daughter’s name to Gauhar Jaan. Within a few days, 'Malka Jaan' became recognized as a famous skilled singer and Kathak dancer of Banaras. After some time, Malka Jaan went to Calcutta with Gauhar and started performing in the court of Nawab Wajid Ali Shah.

According to reports, at the peak of her career Gauhar Jaan was given a personal train when she was invited to sing. Gauhar Jaan used to wear precious gold and silver jewelry and never used to repeat her ornaments. Gauhar Jaan was the first crorepati singer of India.

Gauhar Jaan gave her first performance in 1887 in 'Darbhanga Raj', which is now in Bihar. She was later appointed as the court musician of ‘Darbhanga Raj’. Gauhar Jaan started performing in Calcutta from 1896 and she became very popular in the city.

It is to be noted that Gauhar Jaan, who took Indian classical music to new heights, faced sexual assault when she was only 13 years old. Gauhar, however, recovered from this shock and succeeded in making a name for herself in music world. Gauhar Jaan’s childhood was full of struggle and she spent her childhood in a brothel. Gauhar Jaan faced several issues in her personal life too as she was betrayed by her relatives. According to reports, Gauhar Jaan, who was once a millionaire, died on January 17, 1930. It is said that Gauhar, who was once super rich, died penniless. Gauhar Jaan’s relatives cheated her and spent all her money, forcing her to ask people to arrange food for her.
