Chairman of All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) RA Yadav was today suspended in connection with the corruption case registered against him by the CBI.

Human Resource Development minister Kapil Sibal took the step after Yadav defied the ministry's instruction to step down or go on leave in view of the inqury against him in the corruption case filed by CBI early this month.

"Yadav did not step down on his own nor did he go on leave. It was not appropriate on part of Yadav to continue in the post given the investigation against him. So he has been suspended," HRD Ministry sources said.

The CBI on July 16 arrested AICTE member secretary K Narayan Rao besides registering corruption cases against Yadav, Regional Officer Sriom Dalal, Deputy Director Robinder Randhawa and Advisor H C Rai.
"As Rao has been jail, he is deemed to have been suspended," sources said. As per government rules, an official lodged in jail for more than two days is Automatically considered as suspended.

The ministry has also suspended Dalal while it terminated the contract of Randhawa. Advisor Rai was repatriated to his parent cadre, sources said. AICTE vice chairman SS Mantha has been given the additional charge of chairman. The AICTE has been asked to repatriate the officials who had come on deputation, the sources said.

Rao was arrested for allegedly accepting bribe for approving an engineering college in Hyderabad. The ministry took the action after the CBI gave a detailed communication on the entire issue.

Yadav was appointed as the chairman of the premier regulatory body in 2008. Earlier he served as the vice chairman of the organisation from 2005. CBI has said that Dalal had demanded bribe for processing a case of increase in intake of seats of a Faridabad-based engineering college. The owner of the college had brought the matter to the knowledge of Yadav, Randhawa and Rai. However, no action was taken.

CBI registered a case against Yadav, Randhawa, Rai and Dalal under sections of Prevention of Corruption Act. The CBI has claimed to have recovered cash and property worth crores during the searches from the residences and offices of these officials. Yadav was not available for comment.
