PM Narendra Modi meets Bill and Hillary Clinton in New York

Prime Minister Narendra Modi met former US President Bill Clinton and his wife and former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton at his hotel here on Monday. The Clintons exchanged warm handshakes with the Prime Minister. Hillary Clinton hugged Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj and exchanged pleasantries with before both sat down for talks. Senior officials, including India's Ambassador to the United States S. Jaishankar, were also present on the occasion.

Bill Clinton served as the 42nd President of the United States from 1993 to 2001. He was his country's third youngest president at the age of 46. Since demitting the office of US President, he has been travelling around the world giving lectures and promoting the activities of his Bill Clinton Foundation. On July 16 this year, he visited India, and specifically a kitchen in Jaipur, Rajasthan, to understand the nuances of a school lunch programme for feeding over one million children daily across India.

Clinton visited a kitchen run by the non-governmental organization Akshaya Patra. He took a round of the kitchen where meals for thousands of children was being cooked. Clinton also announced that Caterpillar Inc., an American machinery and engine corporation, had also come on board to provide a grant to Akshaya Patra for the mid-day meal scheme. He arrived in Rajasthan as part of his tour to the Asia/Pacific countries of Vietnam, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea and Australia, to review the work of the Clinton Foundation.

This was his third visit to the Pink City where he first visited as the U.S. President and later on re-visited as part of his Clinton Foundation. Clinton also visited a school and community centre in Lucknow which through the Clinton Health Access Initiative, are providing health care training and information about using zinc and oral rehydration salts to treat diarrhea, as well as educating mothers through self-help groups and school children through classes on these lifesaving treatments. In Lucknow, he visited a village where he interacted with school students and women availing the benefits of the Clinton Foundation.

Clinton visited Jabrauli village. He told women they can empower themselves through self help groups and overcome their poverty. After stepping down from office, Clinton has widely worked towards improving access to life saving medicines, addressing the growing concern of climate change among others, in the Asia-Pacific region. Former U.S. Secretary of State, ex-Senator, and former First Lady of the United States Hillary Clinton visited India in May 2012 for three days. She made trips to Kolkata and New Delhi.

In Kolkata, she held talks with West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. She also urged India to buy less oil from sanctions-hit Iran and commended India for "working to lower purchases of Iranian oil" hoping that it would do more. She also visited Chennai and had an interaction with Chief Minister J.Jayalalithaa. After her visit to India she also wrote a book titled 'Hard Choices' in which she disclosed that the sole purpose of her visit was to convince New Delhi to reduce its dependence on Iranian oil, in which she succeeded by the end of her trip. Clinton had earlier visited India in March 1995 with her daughter Chelsea during a 12-day tour of South Asia as U.S. First Lady.
